Moving a Piano Yourself?
A-1 Pianoman

Moving a piano yourself is a very bad idea. It takes proper training,
experience, and the right equipment to do it safely. Pianos are very
heavy. Spinets and consoles can weigh 300 to 500lbs. Large uprights
can weigh from 500lbs to 1000lbs. Grand pianos can weight from 500lbs
to 1500lbs.
Pianos are awkward. They can tip over and fall on you in the blink of an
eye.
Let's take a simple move as an example." The in-house move", moving a
piano from one wall to another.
Over the years I've seen:
Large uprights on their backs on the floor. We were called because they
couldn't pick it back up. Deep grooves across the hardwood floors, new
and old. People mistakenly believe that since pianos have little wheels
that it should be easy. But these little casters don't rotate easily and
become stuck and then they act like chisels on hardwood floors. Also, a
piano weighing 500lbs, just standing still transfers its weight to four little
points(casters), will leave dents in the floor. .
A lot of broken legs (pianos that is). We are always bringing pianos to our
shop repairing legs.
I could almost say that it's a second income. Legs on grands and spinets
can easily break.
Pianos stuck in stairways, driveways, doorways and walkways.
Now remember these were simple moves.
In the end, it's cheaper to hire a professional to do it right. Than to cause
damage to your piano,
yourself and others, or to your property which may cost you untold $$$.
